Trump Inaugural Address- Remember What He Said

In case you missed it, or perhaps because you missed it by choice, Donald Trump was sworn in today as America’s 45th president. Like it or not, reality is what it is. (Remember- no FAKE NEWS here!)

When reading his inaugural address afterwards, so many things struck me as unusual, yet rhetoric being what it is, there were also words that I could take hold of, in the (as yet unverified) spirit of having an open mind and in not wanting our nation to become a pariah at home and abroad.

There were some very clear statements made by the new president that I want you to remember, because despite the proliferation of falsehoods strewn throughout politics and from the mouths of politicians, we need to always remember that the power belongs to us and our ability to hold elected officials to their word-through whatever peaceful means possible-is one of the arrows in our collective quiver.

So I’m hoping (against rationality it seems) that when Trump uttered these words today they will be brought back to his own ears time and time again:

“And this, the United States of America, is your country.

What truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether our government is controlled by the people.

January 20th 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this nation again.

The forgotten men and women of our country will be forgotten no longer.

Everyone is listening to you now.”

Actually, sir, everyone is listening to YOU now. And watching as well.

I completely agree that government SHOULD be controlled by the people, so when we see recent reports that 70% of Americans believe the climate is changing and at the same time see that the controlling political party in Congress is willing to ignore climate change completely, the words of Trump do not match the reality. So what will he do? Adhere to his words and refuse to support anti-climate agendas? Doesn’t seem too likely when you read the “America First Energy Plan” on the freshly updated White House website. If there’s a way to exploit oil, gas, coal and other fossil fuel energy without deregulating those industries or wreaking havoc on nature then I’m all ears. But lifting protections on federal lands and promoting a coal energy industry when we could be investing in solar, wind, nuclear, and hydro- all which can meet our needs, produce jobs, and drive revenue doesn’t seem to be the way. And a great number of Americans agree with me.

Is he listening to us now?

Or when I see that 61% of Americans support the rights of LGBTQ citizens to marry, among other very important equality rights at stake, and then examine the cabinet he’s assembled and their very opposite stance, along with a seemingly inhuman desire to punish non-hetero citizens, I can only wonder what he really means when he says this:

“At the center of this movement is a crucial conviction: that a nation exists to serve its citizens.”

and this:

“I will fight for you with every breath in my body – and I will never, ever let you down.”

Will Trump defend the LGBTQ community from his own appointees? A majority of Americans believe in equality for ALL Americans.

Is he listening to us now?

Health care anyone? Fact Check: Obamacare IS THE SAME THING as the ACA. For those too bothered to check this out before voting to strip their own insurance away from themselves, it might be nice to hear that only 26% of Americans actually support a full repeal of the ACA. Pretty much everyone agrees that the ACA has issues. Could it be that 8 years of GOP obstructionism was the real problem with Obamacare? Instead of helping to make a health care system that does work for us all, the GOP congress wants you to do without a reasonable system. By the way, have you checked into the health care perks Congress gets?  There’s nothing on the new Trump White House website that even talks about health care. Meanwhile, Paul Ryan and his cronies are preparing to gut the system without regard to those it helps, in favor of those they help- the 1%. Americans want and need health care that works and is reasonable. We’ve been asking for decades.

Is he listening to us now?

But here is what he said that I whole-heartedly embrace:

“We will no longer accept politicians who are all talk and no action – constantly complaining but never doing anything about it.

The time for empty talk is over.

Now arrives the hour of action.

Do not let anyone tell you that it cannot be done. No challenge can match the heart and fight and spirit of America.”

Damn right. I’m here to fight for what is right. I hope to see you out there too.

To paraphrase Mitch McConnell, my new job is to make sure Trump is a HALF TERM president.
