Defeat of GOP Health Care Bill Is A Win for Americans

TRUMPCARE FAILS!

RYAN GOES HOME WITH TAIL BETWEEN LEGS!

TRUMP SAYS OBAMACARE WILL STAY!

After originally stonewalling efforts to make the ACA a bipartisan bill that would make health care better for Americans, the GOP spent the next seven years trying in vain to repeal the law while Obama was in office, knowing full well that their efforts were symbolic at best and doomed to failure. And for all of those seven years the GOP never made any meaningful attempt to introduce legislation that was better than the ACA, or ever made an attempt to work with Democrats to make the worst parts of the ACA better. Instead, they baited voters with a promise to create better healthcare for all Americans if only they were given total control of the legislative and executive branches of government.

Donald Trump, a man who famously calls himself the best deal maker of all, who promised to repeal and replace the ACA with a plan that would cover everyone with terrific insurance, the best insurance plan ever, has been reduced to blaming Democrats,  the party not in control and who didn’t create or fight for the replacement to the ACA (aka Obamacare) ever, for this terrible bill’s defeat. After using the scant political capital he has, after browbeating House members and threatening them with a loss of reelection, after sending his VP and Secretary of Health and Human Services to convince reticent lawmakers to jump on board, the failure to even put the bill to a vote because he knew it would fail exposes the empty rhetoric and inability to govern that is Trump and today’s GOP.

But Trump did get one thing right- his defeat is an example of AMERCA WINNING, and this kind of winning we won’t soon get tired of.

From the beginning, Paul Ryan’s health care plan was exposed for what it really was- a tax cut for the rich and a spiteful stab at a program that was designed for people instead of corporate profits- and for what it was not- namely a health care plan that would help people get the care they need at an affordable price. With it’s obvious scale back to Medicaid, defunding of Planned Parenthood, stripping out of mandated coverages for basic care, and scaled up increases on premiums for the poor and elderly, Democrats were never on board with this plan. Surprisingly, neither were many Republicans. Of course, the GOP didn’t like it for a variety of reasons, including that it didn’t do enough to totally screw people over, that it might make them unlikely to get reelected when people started to feel the pain of the law, and that (hold your breath) many of their constituents actually DO like the ACA when they stopped calling it Obamacare. It was enough to doom the plan no matter how hard Ryan and Trump rallied for it to pass.

In his defeat, a grim faced Ryan proclaimed, “We’re going to be living with Obamacare for the foreseeable future.”

And Trump, for his part, is moving on, acknowledging that any replacement bill is not coming back up soon.

To which we say GOOD.

To every voter who has called their congress person over these past several weeks to register your dissent with the Trumpcare plan, THANK YOU. Your voice matters!

To every person who sent a letter, made a phone call, participated in a demonstration, talked to friends and family to engage them in the debate, who supported organizations like Planned Parenthood, WE DID IT.

For now at least, we can breathe some relief. But that doesn’t mean we can rest for too long. More battles loom ahead, and this loss, coupled with continued defeats in the courts to the Travel Ban, may make the GOP and Trump even more nasty, more punitive, more intransigent in their efforts to roll back progress made. And we still have many fights ahead, from the budget slashing proposals to attacks on the environment to equality matters…and of course to helping to middle class and poorest American’s reclaim their hard earned efforts from the 1%.

It’s a shame really when you look at it all. Republicans, with their control of the legislative and executive branches, have an historic opportunity to do things that would cement their legacy as positive changemakers in our country and the world. Unfortunately, the GOP is not filled with leaders or statesmen, no forward thinking ideas or policies. Instead this president and Congress will go down in history as failures, as people who sought to turn back progress and human advancement in favor of enriching the already rich for no other reason that they could.

For now, enjoy the victory friends. And keep using your voices. Let’s keep on WINNING!
